i think Dragonmike means he MS was willing, but once he got in the car and realised it was a nightmare, he needed to back out and keep his reputation. so he made an excuse,

MS never drove this seasons car, he used last seasons (and 2007's i think?) car.

It's kinda shame, Kimi and Alonso have pretty much the same problem both - they have quite different driving styles from most drivers, Kimi likes oversteering cars, Alonsos style is just downright perverse, if the team makes the car for both of their drivers, neither Alonso nor Kimi get the best out of it.
