You get put in prison and/or children taken away if you starve them, but it's fine if you grossly over-feed them.

Both are equally detrimental towards the child's health (I say the latter is even worse) so why are they not punished equally too

They are not equally detrimental. Try this don't eat for 2 weeks see what damage that lack of calories, nutrients, etc. does to your body then try eating your normal diet but add in a donut or two a day. Which is worse starvation or a few empty calories.

God damn diet Nazis.
