same here, we use Toyo Hiluxes with 3 litre NA and turbo' diesels and tow 2 ton trailers with them, also use Isuzu light trucks either NA or turbo. Not fast but with our speed limits they can hustle along with the traffic OK on the flat. Not much good on the hills, though, except the turbo Isuzu trucks.
What we use would be severly compromised in the States and I can see why people would have a use for the larger trucks - just a shame they don't have decent diesels, as I said.
Got an aquaintance with three Dodge Rams with Cummins turbo diesels that have had various Banks tuning upgrades on them and they're fast AND surprisingly economical.
You have to remember that only a relatively small proportion of fuel stations in the united states supply diesel.

Most Americans avoid diesels after they got let down by the horrible offerings from GM in the 1980's (basically GM converted standard petrol V8's to run on diesel which as you can imagine led to them blowing up at around 50,000 miles)
