It's the small companies like Internode and iinet that are driving innovation with high speed internet with VoIP, 100mbit fibre to new homes (internode offer 100/5 Mbit) or wimax to rural areas, but there is only so much they can do. The big players that can rapidly change things just sit on their butts and sit on the profits as long as they can.
From what I understand Telstra only owns the copper lines which provide the phone line and ADSL capabilities. ADSL2+ 9although also runs on copper lines) is apparently different and is not monopolized by Telstra hence the much cheaper prices then standard ADSL connections. I unfortunetely have to pay internode to rent ADSL2+ services from Telstra so I'm essentially paying double the normal price[thumbdown].

Also I just found this. Internode are started to roll out FTTH right now and it's prices are awesome. I can get a 50Mb connection with more download quota for the price I'm paying now. To bad it's limited to Queensland only but who cares, in a few years I'll be using it[thumbup]. maybe a 100Mb connection instead.
