it is tough to fire the ass if he is making tons of money for the company, though, at some point office/work continuity might come into play where if everyone elses work is suffering because of him, their loss in productivity might outweigh his gains, thus you nix him....unless of course what ever he is selling sells itself, and anyone who would replace him would do equally as well.
The second situation... i would look to find him another job in the company if at all possible, one where he can be used better...if not available, team player and great guy or not, he would have to go. There are tons of other team players out there who won't make his mistakes.
