Sounds like a sensor maybe going bad. Also do you mean the catalytic converter when you say middle of the exhaust? What are the temps looking like when the fans comes on. It could just be a faulty temp sensor or thermostat.
Easy way to tell as i'm not sure what car it is, would be to see if it is giving any codes. Some or most parts places will have the tool to do it with and don't charge anything. Some will make up excuses they don't have the right software, blah blah deal.
Hope you get it sorted out heat is a bad thing for aluminum/dual overhead cams these days.
