It's a funny old thing really isn't it? I wouldn't really agree with "voluntary extinction", that does seem a bit drastic. But I don't really agree with the idea of just continuing on mindlessly breeding, filling up and consuming the planet and assuming it will all work out fine.
It's a strangely perpetual cycle. There's issue with an "aging population", where most people are old and there aren't enough of the younger generation to support them, so a government will encourage families. But then infrastructure and resources are put under great strain and there's still problems.
Maybe if we keep expanding, technology will save the day. We'll build massive archologies, or start off-world colonies, by virtue of continued expansion, we'll find solutions.
Personally I won't be having children, not in the hopes of leading humanity to extinction, if anything the opposite. Maybe steering us away from our own total destruction. Creating "another mouth to feed" so to speak, seems kind of irresponsible when we can't even properly feed all the mouths we've currently got. That's not to say I object to other people having children, go ahead and do that. Some of us definitely should. But not for me I think. [xmascandle]
