There's no difference in how much we eff up this planet and it will survive. The earth has been here for over 4 Billion years, I hardly think humans can mess it up so much that nature wont be able to take it back once we are gone.
I think that's under-estimating the power of humans. As far as historical references for "things getting back to normal", we have no precedent to base that on, we don't have a reference for the entire history of a similar species (we, humans, are unique). There are however many examples of humans irreversibly damaging elements of the planet, extinction being the prime example. I believe we do have the power to destroy it, and that power will increase as the volume of humans on Earth also increases.
