Sponsorship is the real kicker though, especially if you've got the good looks.
Oh absolutely, and not just Ronaldo himself but for Real Madrid's global image. Beckham wasn't bought because he was the best player in the world, they simply wanted to increase their global market, especially in Asia where La Liga just doesn't have the pull of the English Premier League. If Madrid can use Ronaldo properly then they can make their £80 million back in no time.
"When [David] Beckham came we went from earning €7m a year to €45m a year through our deals with our sponsors. We salvaged the situation of the club. If Cristiano Ronaldo comes, even though he is currently with Nike, he then puts on an Adidas shirt every week. There are certain players who are very profitable because they have spectacular commercial repercussions that earn the club money." Personally, given how much Real Madrid have gone and ****ed up the transfer market with their ridiculous displays of spending the bank's money, I hope that this Galcticos Era ends the same way as the last one did.
What happens to the 80 million if he is unable to come to a wage agreement with Real Madrid? No money changes hands until the player agrees personal terms with the club. United hold Ronaldo's contract so footballing transfer laws say that Madrid have to agree a fee with his club before they are allowed to speak to the player. It might well be that the player doesn't want to move, in which case no money changes hands and everything returns to normal.
That won't happen here though, he wants to go.
