What happens to the 80 million if he is unable to come to a wage agreement with Real Madrid?

The transfer doesn't happen. Basically, Man U have agreed that, since there is £80m on the table, RM can start talking to Ronaldo. Obviously Ronaldo and his team will have to have his agreement with his new club for the money to then take place. The "money" itself may not totally be cash; some may be a partial exchange with another player RM want to get rid of.
