So when a player signs with a club they sign for a certain number of seasons? How many season were left on Ronaldo's contract? Now that he may be going to Real Madrid his contract with Man Utd will be void when he signs with Madrid?

It's something that's discussed between the player and the club, sometimes with escape clauses from both parties but with the ability for the club to sell the player. Say if the player was unhappy and had a clause he could leave after one year during his 5-year contract the club would be forced to sell him on. His contract with Man U will cease the moment he signs his contract with RM under FIFA rules.
