i know prednisone is often prescribed as an anti-inflamitory. Maybe your throat is aggravated and swolen for whatever reason, and prednisone should keep the inflamation down.

keep in mind this is just a wild guess

steroids can be prescribed for lots of things though. pain control, anti-inflamitory, asthma, cancer, immune deficiencies, ect.. I do a lot of outdoors stuff in the summers. I've even been prescribed prednisone for poison ivy (it cleared it up amazingly too)
