Very cool, good find. I think it like that ending better to be honest. It shows Neville realizing he forgot that they were still human.

this ending makes less sense, as 'they' appear to be now creatures with compassion, love and respect, where previously they were basically just zombies.

however, i prefer it

They had all those things all along. It was Neville who assumed they didn't and therefore abducted them to experiment.
