I have on my bmw

a front set of 40's

and a rear set of 35's

it helps with the stance of the car and is not Illegal.

only thing that will make the tyres Illegal is if you shoe horn different rim size tyres.

remember though put your best tyres on the front as it will improve handling

so I'd put the mitchelins on the front which works out nicely with what you have stated above
