Kids shouldnt think one armed people are normal, as we are all born with two.
So what should kids think about people like her who are, as you put it, "abnormal"?
What should children think about people that are born without the use of their legs?
What should children think about people with Cerebral Palsy or Muscular Dystrophy?
What should children think about people who are black?
What should children think about people who aren't as pretty as others?
I'm really kind of looking froward to an answer. I can understand your argument that the presenter is not average (the whole concept of normal is a stretch anyway) but I don't see the reason to make this an issue unless you feel that children should be taught to treat people who are not average in different ways.
Children are well aware of the differences between themselves and others. I've worked as a special educator with children for a while, and I can certainly tell you that they do know what's average and what's not, but it isn't a big deal to them, because they can still see the underlying similarities between themselves and others. They're fully aware that Nick is in a wheelchair, and that Sally is unable to talk or feed herself but it doesn't matter, the kids still always find a way for them to be included in the group and I think that's a more important lesson to be learned than to teach kids that some people "aren't normal."
