Whilst I agree "vigilantism" isn't the answer.
The definition of the word is totally different to what we were talking about and that is meting out justice in the form of a sound beating, (i.e. reasonable force) when you've literally caught some thieving scum inside your house.

If we were talking about "vigilantism" , we would be talking about, lets say, your out on the town and you come home to find your house has been broken into and things have been taken, Then you find out from someone, that a particular person who lives nearby is responsible and you go round with a baseball bat and break both their knees,

Now that IS "vigilantism", Whilst what I was on about, was protecting your property.

And we all know, much to our regret that the justice system in this country of ours is so f*cked up beyond all belief that the innocent are penalised whilst the criminals get off scot free.

Well I'd much rather take the chance and beat the living crap outta some burglar who I've found breaking into my house, than hide under the bed, call the cops, wait 30 minutes to an hour for them to arrive, should they arrive at all, to find that some thieving scumbag has rifled through my belongings and terrified my family to the point that they feel their house and home is now desecrated and that living here is no longer of any comfort to them.

That "reasonable" force you go on about, Bungle, actually states quite clearly that should I feel threatened, I can strike first, to the point of rendering the burglar unconscious, (although how he then fell down several flights of stairs and landed on several kitchen knives is beyond my understanding, officer! ), But had it been me, I probably would have just cut the brake pipes on the van and then follow and video it from a distance so I could post the results to youtube.
