It was a funny thing to do, but yes still stupid because he technically could be charged with grand theft auto.

I would have just turned the van off and pocketed the keys, sat across the street watching them load all the stuff into the van, then realize that the keys are gone...

Also in reference to protecting your property, if someone breaks into your house while you're home then it's a home invasion, in which case the perpetrator likely has intent to cause you harm or at the very least threaten you. If they just wanted some stuff, they would've broke in while you're not home.
