I too was late watching this film and also thoroughly enjoyed it.
Though I didn't think his parents were that harsh for him to want to give away all their money like that - I thought there was going to be something truly horrible they'd done but there wasn't much. Oh well.

Well it wasn't their money, actually. It was his. He had $24,000 saved and they were willing to pay the rest if he went on with schooling. Instead he donated his $24,000 to charity and disappeared. And I think his journey into the wild was more for himself and his freedom then about him being rebellious towards his parents. When he decided to stay on the road he even said "The freedom and simple beauty is too good to pass up..."
