yeah, I read the book a while back and watched the movie a month or so ago. I thought the movie was really well done, but like homebrew brought up, the movie sort of views everything through rose colored glasses. For example, I would have shagged the feck out of that girl from the trailerpark[yes] The cinematography and directing in the movie were really incredible though. He did seem kind of crazy in a good but at the same time naive way though. For example, trying to kayak the Colorado River without any sort of idea what he's getting into .... or getting cut off in Alaskan backcountry without realizing there would be permafrost and snow melt off. It seems like he died from starvation, but brought on by poisoning and diahrea from eating the wrong herbs.
What made it kind of cool for me was that I was actually in Alaska and in a lot of the same backcountry. I know exactly where Stampede Trail is. I camped in and all around Denali. Nothing hardcore like several months by myself; but I lived there for 9 months and did around 10 or so backcountry camping trips. I was there in 98, i guess he died there in 92.
