Just read this story about a teenager killed by a 16 year old because he gave him a 'dirty look', the offender gets 'life' apparently but it says he needs to serve a 'minimum of 12 years':

That doesn't mean he'll be automatically out of prison in 12 years time - it just means that he'll be eligible for parole then.
