When you say long range you must mean really LONG RANGE if you are considering a 338 magnum. Unless you plan on shooting for targets at 1000+ yards (with a dedicated spotter helping out) you don't need a Lapua for target practice. I fired about 10 rounds off an AMPTech DSR1 and it was fun and all, but rounds are about 3 dollars a piece for the cheap shit and almost $10 per round for hunting quality. You are better off getting a more traditional rifle for practice unless money is no object.

What is your price range and experience level with rifles currently?
I pay a little over eight bucks a round for 300 Grain Subsonic hollow points.

Out of state bighorn tags aren't easy to come by - after losing an opportunity to get a really nice trophy ram because the bitch was just a tad bit too far away I couldn't reasonably chance taking the shot, because of that instance, I invested some time and money so that ordeal wouldn't ever happen again.

Now-a-days it's not an issue, minus having to account for drift and velocity factors - I got a good deal on a Sightron spotter scope/Long Range scope combo as well...
