Unless something's changed, in recent years, never smack someone on the back that is choking, as the shock of being hit can cause whatever they're choking on to lodge farther down the throat.

Also, all you can do is keep the person calm if they can breathe. The Heimlich only works when the pathway is fully obstructed, using the air that you'll never be able to force out of your lungs on your own to dislodge whatever is there. If the pathway isn't shut, the air can just go around the obstruction and leave the victim in a worse place.

Finger sweep and Heimlich, that's it. . .no back slapping. Not to mention, if you hit the wrong vertebra, you can possibly knock the person out. Then you're really ****ed.

Or at least that's how I learned it in lifeguarding/first responder classes.
