Alienware is good, but pricey. You are paying a lot just for the name. I have been presently surprised by ASUS as of late. A friend of mine bought one in January and it has been great. It's a Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 1GB of RAM, x1650 etc and was about $1300. I just bought another ASUS laptop for work. It's a Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8400M, 160GB, 14" screen for just $1300. It weighs just a hair over 5 pounds. If you can get them where you are at, you may want to take a look at them.
When I was pricing them out, other brands like Dell, were a few hundred more for the same specs. Also a good thing to keep in mind is to get them with little ram as possible and upgrade it yourself. Most vendor overcharge for memory. You can get a 1GB stick of DDR2 for around $40-$50. Dell will charge another $100 or more just for that extra stick.
