I basically just want to use the printer that is set up on her computer and that is about it.
Make sure each computer has an easy name (system properties, computer name)

Then share a folder on each, right click on any folder, click sharing, click "share this folder on the network". You might get a warning box asking if its ok, click "just enable file sharing"

then in the run box type \\computername, poof, there are all the folders shared on the other computer.

as for the printer all you have to do is right click on it, click sharing and do the same thing you did with the folder. then on the other computer, add printer, go to network, and hit browse, it should find it automatically.

OS versions and workgroups have very little to do with it working, here at work our main computer has all the files i use regularly (avg,firefox,IE6 for 98/2000/xp) and i go to it from a huge range of messed up, old and crappy computers everyday.

If by chance you ran the xp home network setup wizard... i don't know how to fix that lol.
