I'm going to guess the cancer risk is linked to more hours of daylight and exposure to the sun, and possibly something to do with selling newspapers.

Over in the UK we tend to focus on the amount of road deaths that occur in Winter due to the longer, darker nights. But hey, farmer's get to wake up when its getting light, so thats ok then.
