is there any report about imam mahdi as emerging when muslim give up hope and forget about imam mahdi? i read somewhere imam mahdi as will emerge at a time whn very few muslims will know of him or remember him? if thats true cant be anytime soon?

What is authentically reported is that the earth will be filled with tyranny and oppression before his appearance. And he shall lead an army later on in his Caliphate with black flags from Khurasan, and he will receive his Bay`ah between al-Rukn and al-Maqaam (Makkah).

So you can't really miss him, don't worry. As for the condition of Muslims, without much effort I'll tell you that the condition of the Muslims before the Mahdi will be bad, there are many narrations such as "This religion has begun as a stranger and it will return to being a stranger".
