A mushrik (مشرك) is some one who associates a partner (شريك) or partners with allah.
An atheist is some one who denies allah's existence.

You can't associate partners with some thing you don't believe exists.

The reasoning still stands.

no it doesn't there are various types of shirk

- the atheist is a mushrik due to the fact that they practice shirk in Ruboobeeyah/Lordship

by his denying that there is a Rabb/Lord over the creation.
