I heard the following story from a learned person.
Some rustic people (as usual known for their sturdy and rough life style) were visiting beloved Prophet (PBUH).
After prayers beloved Prophet (PBUH) kissed either Hazrat Hasan (RA) or Hazrat Hussain (RA) - whoever was present. The visitors were shocked. How can you treat the would be man in such a soft manner, they asked?
Beloved Prophet (PBUH) siad, "What can I do if your hearts have become non-loving".

This is basically the gist of the event. The details will certainly be different.

'A'isha said, "A bedouin came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and asked, "Do you kiss your children? We do not kiss them.' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Can I put mercy in your hearts after Allah has removed it from them?'"

Abu Hurayra said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, kissed Hasan ibn 'Ali while al-Aqra' ibn Habis at-Tamimi was sitting with him. Al-Aqra' observed, 'I have ten children and I have kissed any of them.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, looked at him and said, 'Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.'"
