I have been fearing this question all my life.
To be precise the fear was of the assertion : Shariah state is undefined. Khilafa is just a pi in the sky, by and by.
The times in which we live are unprecedented in the history of Islam. It has been more than 80 years since the demise of caliphate and it is for the fist time that we got divided into such charged geographical boundaries known as countries. The ethnicity based division and the slogans of "patriotism" which it has led to, is serving as huge obstacle in the efforts of the formation of an Islamic confederation (or Islamic caliphate in the broader sense). The surfacing of relativistic definitions of Shariah , Jihaad and caliphate under these influences is yet another calamity. Finally , many issues related to Ijtihaad have surfaced during the last 80 years which are unsolved and those issues (like Islamic economic system , Democracy in Islam etc) will become of vital importance once the idea of Islamic caliphate is pondered in future.

However , i believe that despite these calculated obstacles , Caliphate is a practical possibility. The reason is that reality has almost never acted in a disciplined calculated way , rather it has made its way in a spontaneously random and splendidly unexpected fashion through out the history of mankind. God acts in mysterious ways and one Salahuddin can change the face of the events.
