To the OP sister ... I think the best thing you did is hand the money back to him. Find a islamic marriage councillor and try to work out your differences. Perhaps get a respected family member involved.

It may be something else that is bothering him and he's just taking it out on you (not that its okay)

But before making any rash decisions, please please perform istihkaara.
