I only heard about this guy a few years ago. It seemed like he just appeared out of nowhere.

This is because this guy has changed his stance and positions often. He used to be aligned with this group or that group so there are many quotations of praise for him that many of his followers like to cite, despite the fact that this guy has changed positions on many issues. Many of his former allies have spoken out against him because of his persistent metamorphosis, but some remain in the dark about how far he has gone.
