The issue of excessive worship is discussed in the book "Bidah and the salafs worship" and gives the accurate position on the subject with clarity. Al-Uthaymeen is of the salafi protestant Islam oritentation and not reliable.

But it does not provide any bar by which to measure extremism.

So in the absence of it, I personally would refer to the bar that seems to be present in the hadith quoted in the link above:

The Prophet (Allah bless him) stated, “None makes the religion difficult except that it overcomes him. So, aim for what is right, stick to the moderate way…” [Bukhari, Sahih]
