just wondering, is masturbation better than zina? i know neither is good, but anyone come across any opinions that say it is better to fall into one than the other?

Both are wrong.
Zina is a major sin and for married partners the Hadd is prescribed as punishment.
Masturbation is a lesser crime.
Marriage is the solution to both.
