Choose one scholar and follow him in fiqh, and be open minded enough to accept there are differing views. For example, the mufti I ask tends to disagree with Mufti AS Desai. Then find a shaykh for the purposes of spirituality. Job done. Bob's your uncle.
In fact this leads to the VERY IMPORTANT question:

How do laymen decide when muftis give conflicting answers?

Answer: Apply your taqwa and choose the one closest to the truth. If not possible, apply precaution and stick to the "safer" fatwa... Better to get burnt in this world than to get burnt in the akhirat!
