I believe slientflute is correct.

A prophet is sent to an already believing nation to confirm the message that came before.
A Messenger is sent with a new message/Sharia (code of Law) to present to his nation.

Adam (as) was the first man, so he needed no scripture or Book to present to his kids, and the generation after that etc...

Therefore he must've been a Prophet.
