Islamically speaking you can't really get engaged without the permission of the girls parents which is why they maybe suspicious of you, and you shouldn't really have contact with the girl either. If you were unaware of these things it is best to apologise to her parents and explain to them that you are a convert and are not aware of some of the rulings etc and you wish to ask for her hand in the correct manner
