The writing of the prophetic narrations and knowledge during the days of the companions may Allah be pleased with them.

al-Salamu `Aleykum,

In the days of the companions of the Prophet (SAWS), writing wasn't as famous as it is today, because they still relied mainly on their memory in transmitting narrations and religious knowledge.

wal-Salamu `Aleykum,

This is a significant point.
The tradition to memorize things is still very respected and valuable in Islam.
When I did not do my home work of my assigned Verses in the Tajweed class the Qari remarked that no problem - Allah (SWT) has not given equal brain to everybody. It was pinching but it is also a distraction from the point I am trying to make. Modern attitudes towards education have devalued the facility to memorize and the people who depend on memorization skills are scoffed at (except when Zakir Naik does his Chapter This-Verse This jig). Far back in time the things were different. That is the time when this facility was put to the best use to preserve and protect Islamic teachings. People first devalue memorization by calling it parroting and then they, in the second step, conclude that nothing useful can be accomplished by memorization. The third step is most devastating - Hadith are useless because these are compiled two centuries later.

Apologies but this was the only place where I could point this out. Back to writing of Hadith.
