Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam used to seek forgiveness of Allah swt many many times throughout the day, some say 70 times a day, though he is beloved of Allah swt. How much tawbah and astaghfar are we doing though we all are well aware of what kind of things we have done and said in the past and what kind of things we are capable of doing.

that's a deep thought

its so easy to just get into the mechanical habit of doing istighfar 70 times a day because its a Sunnah,

whilst forgetting to do it with strong intention and concentration and at the same time forgetting to repent from all our mistakes and doubtful actions through the day so we are building up things against us on that Day of Judgement without realizing it

its a good reason for people to follow a good Sheikh who can help them keep on track and help them avoid 'failing to see the wood for the trees'
