This is a disease, like malaria, where a person, a group, a country or a whole civilization thinks that democracy is the cure for all ills of society. The basic tenet of democracy is that collective decisions must be taken according to the majority wishes.

there is a great irony in this idea too as it is generally attributed to the French enlightenment philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau who used to habitually wear Muslim clothes and was (according to some sources) suspected of having become a Muslim towards the end of his life.

an interesting chapter on him is included in the Influence of Islam on World Civilization by professor Ziauddin Ahmed.
