Greetings. I know little about Islam but I am interested in learning more. In particular, I am interested in Islam’s vision for humanity in the larger universe – where would Islam like to take civilization in the future? I am a very cosmic and mystically oriented person; when I look up at the clear night skies here in the Arizona desert I am filled with awe and a sense that there is some kind of spiritual force up there. I have even begun to think of myself as a Jedi and am exploring that path as well. I have a mystical idea that there are great revelations awaiting humanity up in space, as the spiritual experiences of some of the astronauts suggest (google “Overview Effect”). So, do Muslims look up at the cosmos and want to go there, or are they satisfied with a brief life down here on earth before passing on to the next world? Thank you, and may the Force be with you…

not sure how to reply to this, but maybe you can have “Overview Effect” after the prayers 5 times daily? I'm not speaking about this philosophically. Our awareness of how magnificent the Earth is, and how magnificent every star is with her massive energy, and the fact that there are trillions of trillions of stars out there. Also the knowledge about the position of our solar system within our galaxy, which enables us to see far stars and galaxies unhindered. And how all these were told to us more than 1400 years ago in the Quran. That's just amazing.

And regarding your question;

If we realize how magnificent the galaxies are, and yet we are told that the heaven would be unimaginable, then I would say that the world there would be much much more awesome than this one. If we can go to the space, then

the world in the next life would be much better than the one we have now. Either way, it would be useless to go to the space but to forget the purpose of us being here in the first place. So if I am forced to pick just one, definitely would be the world in the next life
