Yes, I have tried that, but they laugh in my face. Im ridiculed in my family for going to "extremes" with the deen. My parents know its haram, but they persist in doing it. Once my father even asked me in a taunting fashion "son, is this permissible in Islam" while indicating the song playing on the TV.

The approach of directly telling such people, almost never helps these days [especially in the west]. I don't know what to advise you as I am not the right one to give advise, but what I can tell you, from personal experience, is to use hikmah and your actions should be sound when coming across delicate issues like this one, where your family is involved.

Obviously, this doesn't mean to compromise your deen.
Oh and we all agree, I hope so, that the background noise in these serials are awful!
