Isnt voting shirk? especially in democracies where the source of law is supposedly the public? well according to salafis anyway. What's the Hanafi/Deobandi thought on this?
Deobandies allow voting tactically as a Muslim Block to further increase Muslim power. They argue that if Muslims abstain from voting people who hate Muslims may get into power and make life worse for Muslims. Voting is not shirk, because you are not voting to make haram into halal and regardless of who gets into power they will do that anyway.

I personally do not vote however because I believe that voting gives the rulers an excuse to do what they like and to claim that they have the agreement of the voters. I could argue that those who voted for any government gave permission to that government to then make war and kill others abroad. Ron Paul however is saying he would reduce the power of the state and refrain from getting America involved in wars.
