As-Salamu ´alaykum,

The narration about the Prophet's (salla'Allahu ´alayhi wa alihi wa sallam) funeral has been declared weak, as has other narrations, such as the one of Sayyidina Idris and Sayyidina Khadir (´alayhim as-salam) visiting Al-Quds. Therefore the Muhaddithin have generally been of the belief that these narrations cannot be used as proofs to claim that he was alive, and therefore casted doubts on him being alive. To that one may add that him being alive during the time of An-Nabi's funeral (salla'Allahu ´alayhi wa alihi wa sallam) does not necessitate him being alive to day, ´alayhi as-salam.

Conflicting reports have come from both Nawawi and Hafidh Ibn Hajar; and as far as I know, it is all from their own pens.
Like mentioned, An-Nawawi mentioned that there are a lot of reported incidents; and he has also expressed doubt upon his existence; however, his own student mentioned that it was known that Al-Khidr (´alayhi as-salam) used to frequent the Imam (Nawawi). It may be that it is a case where he had doubts until they were removed, and hence both rejection and affirmation are to be found. Similarly it has been rejected by al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (rah), but it has also been seemingly affirmed; and he mentioned him from amongst the Sahaba of An-Nabi, salla'Allahu ´alayhi wa alihi wa sallam.

Wa'Allahu a´lam.
