Couldn't one say the same thing about nearly any and everything that was done with the intention of advancing the deen but wasn't done during the time of the Sahabah? For instance, couldn't someone say, when asked about the permissibility or preferability or engaging in many of the acts that Sufis engage in to purify the soul, that the Sufis aren't more knowledgeable than the Salaf on matters of spiritual purification and as such, to do something that they didn't, is not valid?
