The OP's experience is may be linked to the current far-right comments made wherein it was said that "muslims praying in public are acting like the nazi occupation during the war [ie occupating the country]" so that made the public aware and suspicious of muslims even more.
Note the muslims praying in public do so only for jumu'ah prayers and only in specific places.
