As salaamu alaykum.

What form did Eid celebrations and observances take during the time of the Rasul (peace be upon him) and the Salaf? In what ways did they celebrate the holiday and what specific observations or functions did they hold during Eid that made Eid into an eid (i.e. "holiday" or "celebration")?

I think that knowing the answer to this is important because some of our eid celebrations and customs appear to be incongruent with many of the teachings of Islam in general.

Anyone with any info or insights in this regard, please share insha'allah.
