I need to double the book for this but when I went for Umrah in 2007 I bought the book History of Madinah by Dr Ilyas. In it he mentions that the hole on the green dome is a window and was built so that when the sun is at midday (or some other point) the sunshine will directly go onto the grave of Rasulullah (SAW).

Will check the book tonight and post page number insha allah.
