Now we all know that the Assad Regime is to be blamed for much. but could Assad have at least been telling the truth about their being a foreign presence in Syria (maybe in the initial stages of the revolt)?

why are there so many people who strongly support Assad just as much as there are people who strongly hate Assad?

Because they are kuffar.
Even Hitler at the beginning had a whole nation supporting him, was he right? Numbers don't give right.
