I think there are two reasons why people are good at advising others but not themselves. And neither reason has anything to do with hypocrisy.

1. It's easier to give good advice to other people because you are able to view their situation objectively. When thinking about yourself, it's much harder to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

2. To have knowledge (ilm) and to act on that knowledge are two different things. In other words, you might know what the right thing to do is and might be able to advise other people accordingly. But when it comes to yourself, you might not be able to do it due to a weakness in character.
