I tried to explain this to my family after the birth of my nephew, but it's hard because this is something even practicing Muslims don't take seriously. If you speak out against pictures, photographs, statues, etc., people think you're an extremist. "It's not like I'm worshiping it", they say, as if the permissibility is based on whether or not the object is being worshipped.
